The detail
An ancient French mastiff once used to guard estates, drive cattle and hunt large game, the Dogue de Bordeaux has a massive head and a calm, devoted nature. It is loyal and protective at home, but its size brings a short life and costly health care.
- Temperament
- Calm, loyal, stubborn
- Best fit
- Experienced owners, cool homes
- Trainability
- 2 out of 5 (Stubborn, needs early work)
- Energy
- 2 out of 5 (Moderate walks daily)
- Grooming load
- 2 out of 5 (Weekly brush, clean folds)
What to weigh
The Dogue drools heavily, overheats easily and has one of the shortest lifespans of any breed. Heart disease, bloat and cancer are common, and a strong adult needs solid training.
