Bred in Germany by a tax collector who wanted a protector, the Doberman is fast, sleek, intelligent and devoted to its people. Well raised, it is an affectionate family dog and a natural watchdog, but it needs training, exercise and company.

What to weigh
Dobermans are sensitive, people-attached and energetic, so they struggle with long days alone. Dilated cardiomyopathy is common in the breed and can cause sudden death, so ongoing heart screening matters.
