American scent hounds such as the Black and Tan, Treeing Walker and Redbone were bred to trail raccoons at night and bay them up a tree. Easygoing and friendly at home, they are loud, nose-driven and need space and a secure fence.

Best fit
Rural homes, hunters

What to weigh

Coonhounds bay loudly, follow a scent for miles and need a secure fence and leashed walks. Their long ears need regular cleaning, and they can be hard to house-train.
