The detail

Buff Orpingtons were developed in Kent, England, in the 1890s by William Cook, and are a large, golden, fluffy dual-purpose chicken. They are famously gentle, lay well and go broody, which makes them a family favorite.

Egg output
4 out of 5 (Good steady layer)
Purpose
Eggs and meat
Best fit
Families, backyard flocks
Hardiness
4 out of 5 (Cold hardy, heat hard)

What to weigh

Buff Orpingtons go broody often, which stops egg laying for weeks. Their thick feathers make them struggle in hot, humid summers without shade.
