The detail

Classic llamas carry a light, short coat on the body and little fiber on the head, neck and legs, the athletic type long used in the Andes to carry loads. Owners get a hardy, low-shearing llama suited to packing, trekking and guarding.

Hardiness
5 out of 5 (Very hardy)
Origin
Andes of South America
Best fit
Packing, flock guarding
Temperament
Calm, independent, alert

What to weigh

Llamas must never live alone: a pet needs another llama or alpaca, and a guard llama bonds with the flock it protects. Bottle-raised intact males can develop berserk male syndrome.
