The detail

The domestic canary was developed over centuries from a finch of the Canary Islands, Azores and Madeira, and is kept for song and color. Males sing; females chirp. They are easy to care for and happiest watched rather than held.

Origin
Canary Islands, Azores, Madeira
Best fit
Song lovers, quiet homes

What to weigh

Canaries dislike handling, and only males sing reliably. Two males in one cage may fight, so single males or separate cages are best.
