The detail

Coturnix, or Japanese, quail are small ground birds kept for eggs and meat, and they mature faster than any other poultry. Hens lay nearly an egg a day from about eight weeks old, which makes them a practical choice for small backyards.

Hardiness
3 out of 5 (Keep dry and draft-free)
Origin
East Asia, domesticated in Japan
Best fit
Small-space egg keepers

What to weigh

Coturnix are short-lived and lay heavily in their first year, then less. Males crow and can be aggressive, so most keepers keep one male per several hens.
