The detail

Bettas, or Siamese fighting fish, come from shallow waters in Southeast Asia and are bred for spectacular fins and colors. They breathe air at the surface, which is why they survive in bowls, but they thrive only in heated, filtered tanks.

Origin
Thailand and Southeast Asia
Best fit
First fish, small spaces

What to weigh

Male bettas must be kept alone or with carefully chosen tankmates. Long-finned types are prone to fin rot in poor water.
