The detail
The largest terrier, bred in Yorkshire's Aire valley to hunt otters and rats and later used as a police and war dog, the Airedale is smart, confident and versatile. It is playful and loyal, with a terrier's independent streak.
What to weigh
Airedales dig, chase and can be stubborn, and they stay puppyish for a long time. The wiry coat needs regular stripping or clipping to stay tidy.
