The detail
Bred in southern Africa to track and hold lions at bay for hunters, the Ridgeback is athletic, dignified and independent, with its signature ridge of backward hair. Loyal with family and reserved with strangers, it suits experienced owners.
What to weigh
Ridgebacks are strong, have a high prey drive and can be counter-surfers and escape artists. They need consistent training and early socialization to handle strangers well.
