The detail
An American retriever bred on the Chesapeake Bay to haul ducks from icy, rough water, so it is tougher and more independent than a Lab. Loyal and protective of its family, it suits experienced owners who want a working retriever with a strong mind.
What to weigh
Chessies are more reserved and headstrong than other retrievers and can guard their home and people. The oily coat has a distinct smell and should not be bathed often, which surprises some owners.
