The detail
Once bred for bull-baiting in England, today's Bulldog is a calm, affectionate and stubborn companion with a heavy, low build. Its flat face and body shape bring serious breathing, skin and joint problems that make health the central issue.
What to weigh
Bulldogs overheat easily, snore, and often need surgery for airways, eyes or skin. Most are born by C-section and the lifespan is short. Wrinkle care and weight control are daily jobs.
