The detail
Marans come from the town of Marans in western France and are famous for very dark chocolate-brown eggs. They are hardy, calm dual-purpose chickens, with Black Copper the best-known color in the US.
What to weigh
Egg color varies by line and fades through the laying season. Many hatchery Marans lay lighter eggs than good breeder lines.
