The detail
Lionfish are Indo-Pacific predators known for feathery fins and venomous spines. Volitans lionfish grow large and need big fish-only tanks, while dwarf species suit smaller systems, and all will eat small fish and shrimp.
- Housing
- 120+ gal for volitans, 50+ for dwarfs
- Tank size
- 4 out of 5 (Volitans need big tanks)
What to weigh
Lionfish stings are painful and need care, and they will eat any fish or shrimp that fits in their mouth. Some need patience to wean onto frozen food.
