The detail

Belted Galloways come from southwest Scotland and are named for the white band around their black, red or dun bodies. They are polled, double-coated and hardy, and finish well on grass for lean, flavorful beef.

Temperament
Calm, can be protective
Best fit
Grass-fed beef, cold areas
Docility
4 out of 5 (Calm; cows guard calves)
Upkeep
2 out of 5 (Polled, easy care)
Hardiness
5 out of 5 (Cold and rough forage)

What to weigh

They grow more slowly than commercial breeds, and the heavy coat is a burden in hot, humid summers. Belt markings vary, which matters only for show and registration.
