Pepper came to Revelation Gardens from the outdoor cat colony near the local Elks Lodge, several years before the emergency evacuation of that colony. She has been with us for a long time now, and we’ve had plenty of opportunity to learn something important about Pepper: She likes her space. Pepper is a beautiful, quiet girl who startles easily and prefers to experience her relationships with people from a comfortable distance. She isn’t a lap cat. She doesn’t seek out petting, and when someone approaches too closely, she’s much more likely to move away than lean in for affection. And that’s okay. Over the years, we’ve learned not to measure every cat’s happiness by how much physical affection they’re willing to accept. Pepper can feel safe and content without wanting to be held, cuddled or touched. Could Pepper ever live in a home of her own? We think it’s possible—but it would take a very particular person. Her person would need to understand that adopting Pepper isn’t a project. There may never be a day when she suddenly climbs into a lap or decides she enjoys being petted.
